Closing his eyes, Sam ignored the buzzing of his phone, then he opened them again and tried to focus on the movie in front of him. His stomach clenched. He was such an ass.

“You’re buzzing again.” Next to him, Daniel grabbed a handful of popcorn from the bowl on the coffee table. “Who are we avoiding?”

“No one.”

“Right. Are you sure it isn’t the same person who kept you out all night?” Daniel spoke around a mouthful of popcorn.

“Mind your own business.”

Daniel swallowed. “Yikes. Sore subject. Sorry.”

Guilt washed over him. Daniel was the nicest guy on the planet. He didn’t deserve to have Sam’s frustration taken out on him. “I’m sorry, Daniel. I just don’t want to talk about it, okay?”

“Okay.”

On the TV screen, Tom Hanks was crying over a volleyball. Sam groaned. “Who chose this movie?”

“You did.”

Oh yeah. Dammit. Should have gone with Daniel’s suggestion of something funny. He wasn’t in the mood for this.

The sofa dipped next to him, and he turned as Lucas leaned back into the cushions and pinned him with a dirty stare. Sam sighed. “What’s with you?”

“You know my first night of work is going to be awkward as hell, right?” Lucas crossed his arms. “Are you seriously avoiding her now? She’s going to be pissed, and she’s going to take it out on me.”

“She’s not going to take it out on you. Get over yourself.” Sam turned the TV up.

“Grow up, Sam!” Lucas yelled. “This isn’t one of your high school conquests. It’s Becca.”

“Wait, Becca? As in Rosie’s best friend?” Daniel raised his voice. “Sam…”

Growling, Sam looked toward the hallway. “Would you guys shut up! I don’t want Amos to know.”

“Grow a pair. And stop being an ass.” Lucas stood and stomped out of the room.

Growling again, Sam jumped up from the couch and threw the remote onto the cushions. “I’m going out.”

After he stomped out to the SUV and tore out of the garage and down the driveway, he turned toward Hanks Hollow. His intended destination was Becca’s place, but the closer he got to town, the more he lost his nerve. What on earth could he say to her? Nothing would sound right. Nothing would make what he’d done right. He’d pulled the ultimate asshole move.

Making a last-minute decision, he steered the SUV onto the highway leading out of town, toward the hospital.
